Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said that since everyone’s life has come to a standstill due to coronavirus, the government has decided to give Tk 1,000 to the students so that they can buy clothes, tiffin boxes and necessary things. The Prime Minister, also the Leader of the House, said this in her concluding address to the 9th session of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad with Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Highlighting the government’s stimulus packages taken during the coronavirus period, the Prime Minister said, “We have allocated Tk 112,633 crore in 21 stimulus packages which is 4.3 percent of the GDP.” “Besides, I have also provided financial assistance to non-MPO registered teachers from my special fund. I have sent money to every mosque and madrasa. We are also providing financial assistance outside the government’s incentives,” she also said. “We have taken special measures to ensure that no one is in trouble,” she said, adding that the government has taken this measure so that the wheel of the economy stays moving and people do not suffer.

“We did all the things as we are doing politics for the people,” she added. The Prime Minister said, “Coronavirus is currently prevailing, in the meantime, Cyclone Amphan has come. Then there is the long-term flood. The country is facing one after other calamities. We are trying hard so that the country people do not suffer.” By the grace of Allah, we have been able to overcome all the calamities. Our efforts are only for the people, and that’s what we’re doing, she added.

Requesting the country people not to be discouraged by the danger, the Premier said, “Danger will come. We have to deal with that. You have to prepare in advance for this. We are moving forward with that preparation. That is how we are working for overall development.” She said, “We are by the side of the people as much as we can….when the general holiday was announced, the ministries that were involved in coronavirus tackling, relief distribution and others were working relentlessly.” All activities almost came to a standstill. But the government did not stop working. As a result, we have been able to increase the reserves to $39.40 billion. There is, of course, another reason why our costs have dropped, the Premier also said.

“We don’t have to go abroad due to coronavirus, we don’t have various programs – which is the reason we saved a lot, as a result, we can spend these for the welfare of the people, the Prime Minister said, mentioning that per capita income has risen to $2,064. Though the exports were halted for a while, the imports and exports have increased now. That’s why the government gave the garments what they wanted. “I myself have spoken to the heads of government of many countries so that our exports are not canceled,” she said.

The work of big megaprojects that were halted due to coronavirus is now underway. By digitalizing, we have been able to enable government activities. We want to take the country forward, said the Premier. At the time, the Prime Minister said, “The mosque was built on a gas pipeline in Narayanganj – which is very sad. There was no permission from the authorities to build a mosque at that place.” She also called for compliance with the policy in case of the construction of any facility in the future.

“I pray for the forgiveness of the souls of those who died in the blast while praying in the mosque in Narayanganj. The incident is extremely tragic. It is even more tragic that the mosque was built in a place with a gas line underneath. There was no approval for the construction of the mosque, there was no policy,” Prime Minister said, adding that the accident is the result of “unauthorized and unplanned” construction. If anyone builds a facility in the future, it has to abide by the policy so that no more accidents happen, she added.

About the introduction of the coronavirus vaccine, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said many countries are conducting research on the vaccine. They are contacting us. We have also applied. Money has also been allocated for this. “We will bring the vaccine from where we can get it for less money and make people the virus-free,” she said.

The Head of the Government said coronavirus has brought the whole world to a standstill. Preparations have been made since its outbreak in Bangladesh. Everyone is working together to deal with the deadly virus. The administration and the political activists have stood by the people. “We have been able to control the death rate due to our concerted efforts. We are cooperating as much as possible. Although there was no specific treatment for the virus, yet we helped in any way we could,” she added.

About the allegations of corruption in the medical system during the coronavirus period, the Premier said that the government has been taking various measures to tackle the crisis arising out of the coronavirus pandemic and keep running the wheels of the economy and the development and for this reason money has been spending like water.

Noting that they did not consider how much money was spent or was there any system loss as their first priority was to save the lives of people, she said, “Protecting the lives of the people matters for us instead of how much money was spent.
